Setting the tone with an intricate and rising synthscape, Marisol La Brava & A Flor de Piel open La Bamba with intrigue, dimensionality and the iconic hook of the song.
Glistening guitar melodies and astral flutes take us on a transcendental journey with the well-known opus, as Marisol La Brava & A Flor de Piel, along with the support of producer Iván Rosa, showcase their instrumental mastery and a unique and ethereal take on the song, first made famous by Alvaro Hernández Ortiz and Ritchie Valens.
We appreciate the cosmic energy of this version, and learn that Marisol La Brava & A Flor de Piel is indeed a family band based out of Chicago! Speaking on their intention behind the release, the band confess, “We decided to record our version of this Mexican classic because of its historical importance.”
They continue with historical depth, “The original version is more than 300 years old and was used by runaway slaves from the Veracruz state in Mexico to guide captive slaves find their way to freedom. The line “ay arriba y arriba” instructed slaves to climb the mountains in order to find freedom. Today this line, which means “un and up” inspires us to reach higher and higher towards our dreams and goals.”
We love the philosophy behind the release, and the empowering take on the classic, which serves to educate and entertain simultaneously. The middle eight takes us on a darker, more subversive trip before the final reprise! The vocal design is luscious and the entire energy of the piece feels dimensional and unique to its own design.
Marisol La Brava & A Flor de Piel version of La Bamba has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the family band, and anticipate future releases!
