Setting the tone with a meditative frequency, emotive strings, astral percussion detailing and an intimate guitar, Gianfranco Pescetti opens The Wake with intrigue and dimensionality.
The opus builds with a cosmic trip hop vibe with textured drums and evocative sonic design to create a cohesive and immersive tapestry of sound. Needless to say, we are in awe.
We appreciate the dynamic sonic architecture and the transcendental journey that the composer takes us on. The strings arrangement is luxurious and the overall sentiment of the piece lends itself to an almost out of body experience. The pulsating, yet peaceful finale has us hooked and reaching for the repeat button.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, Gianfranco Pescetti confesses, “This electronic instrumental piece explores the theme of melancholy for a time past, death, and new beginnings, particularly in the context of the pandemic.”
The visionary composer continues, “The title has a dual meaning, referring to both the practice of mourning and the path left behind by a boat, a symbol of movement and progress.”
Gianfranco Pescetti cites Aphex Twin, Tycho, Flying Lotus, Jon Hopkins, Depeche Mode, and The Cure as some of his sonic inspirations, but there is no doubt that the composer is creating a universe of his own.
We deeply connect with the intention that Gianfranco Pescetti shares with his vision, and have added The Wake to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream his wider discography including his 2020 album, Love Is Rain.
