By now, you will know that we are huge fans of JUNK, having featured their assertive commentary on ageism, They Call me Old Man, and the experimental dose of musical narcotics they shared with their debut EP, Chromatose, so when we heard that they had just released, Squakin Like A Bird, we couldn’t wait to hear what they had to say!
Drawing us in with a cerebral guitar melody and the literal sound of squawking birds, JUNK open Squakin Like A Bird with a vibrant energy that has us paying attention to their sound and message.
“Let me guess, you heard that on the internet…” exclaim the artists before delivering thought provoking prose on their perception of social media. “Squakin Like A Bird, you’re mentally disturbed, I don’t care what you read on the fucking internet… “, continue the duo from San Diego, with subversion.
It’s no secret that apathy towards social media and platforms is an at all time high, with the expectancy of Gen A to discard the use of these platforms more than ever before, according to futurist research. This shows once again how JUNK are ahead of their time, thematically and sonically.
The opus expands with the fusion of jazz and funk that we have come to love from JUNK, and naturally showcases their instrumental mastery. Speaking on the message of the song, JUNK confess, “The band with no genre now jumps in to the ring to attack the internet gossip horde! This song not only pushes the limits of music by using an actual live bird, but addresses the issue of internet experts that spout conspiracy and doom and think that they are smarter than everyone else because what they read on the internet.”
They elaborate, “We think the world would be a better place if people would stop trying to enlighten others on what they know from reading internet gossip. Talk about what you DO or what you LIKE but stop trying to push your agenda on other people, cause here at JUNK….we dont care what you read on the internet.”
Except this review of course! We have added JUNK‘s Squakin Like A Bird to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their existing discography, and await new releases from Dirty D and Dubl A!
