Setting the tone with a rising, pulsating beat, intricate percussion detailing and textured vocal add libs, Grichu opens Ma Ma with intrigue and dimensionality. The opus expands with a charming and sometimes cerebral EDM energy, laced with French lyricism and inspiring constructs. Needless to say, we are absolutely mesmerized.
The instrumental design is phenomenal, filled with surprising and fierce nuances, whilst the delivery and design of the vocals is reminiscent of the iconic song, Tu Vuo Fà L’Americano.
Speaking on the meaning of Ma Ma, Grichu confesses, “This french Italo-House song is about my mother, a joyful, energetic and passion-driven woman who lost her fight to cancer much too young, at age 59.”
The visionary artist continues, “I wanted this song to reflect her love for life, her family, and her community. All the instruments are computer-based, some made using kontakt players, some with synths.”
We learn that Grichu is a Montreal-based multi-disciplinary artist who writes and produces her own music. The star has roots within the queer community, and designs her words to be accessible and relatable to all. We love this inclusive way of song creation, and it certainly puts Grichu at the forefront of her art form. She says her art is created with the intention “to get crazy, dance like no one is watching, and be your authentic unapologetic self.”
The genre expansive creator showcases her open approach to artistic creation with vigour and depth, and we have added Ma Ma to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Grichu‘s wider discography including Kinky!
