“Close my eyes, went to sleep and drifted downward, I dreamt of whales floating there, bathed in sound…” sings Cosmo Sheldrake on his latest release, Bathed In Sound, intertwined with the distinctive sound of the great marine mammals, bold synth notes and an immersive water frequency.
Whales are underrated in society. Whilst human beings continue to pillage the oceans for no apparent reason, one almost never really hears the sound of whales in real life, let alone immortalised in high concept music, so for this we are immediately grateful to composer, Cosmo Sheldrake.
We appreciate the poetic prowess of the piece, and the unique depth that the artist shares with his prose. The vocal harmonies are exquisite and the overall mix is highly cerebral as the whale sounds really take us on an unexpected trip. Almost psychedelic in nature.
The finale of the track is full circle, with the protagonist synth of the opus that makes us reverberate on a surreal level, creating a cohesive and dimensional loop for the record.
We learn that Bathed In Sound is also the cinematic lead single (and only track featuring human vocals) from Cosmo Sheldrake‘s forthcoming EP Wild Wet World. The record features “humpback whales, sperm whales, sounds of a bleached coral reef off Lizard Island, long horn sculpin, oyster toad fish and a buck-toothed parrot fish.”
Wild Wet World “pays homage to the ocean” and The Earth is credited as a co-writer, in-line with Brian Eno’s Earth Percent campaign, “a charity providing a simple way for the music industry to support the most impactful organisations addressing the climate emergency”. 50% of royalties from the rest of the EP will be distributed to various charities and organisations specifically supporting the ocean.
The EP is set for release on 26th April with a special live show on 19th May at The British Library in London. We have added Bathed In Sound to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore Cosmo Sheldrake‘s wider discography.
