We had the honour of featuring Occurrence as they channelled love energy and teased their upcoming record with the evocative single, Heels over Head, so when we heard that they had just released The Remote Past Tense, we couldn’t wait to experience it!
Drawing us in with cerebral strings, band member Cat Hollyer opens The Remote Past Tense with an introspective message as she sings, “The last thing I want to say, is that I never loved you, but it just isn’t true…”
We immediately love the depth that Cat conveys, and the emotive nature of the song, before it expands with a rising and euphoric synthscape. The build of The Remote Past Tense is exquisite, and it is abundantly clear that Occurrence have poured their authenticity into the opus.
Speaking on the release, Cat confesses, “There are some Occurrence songs that lend themselves to me having tight control over my vocals, creating a sense of detachment. This is not one of those. This song is about every breakup, ever. I mined all the details of my relationships as if they were film stills or a slide projector show, really trying to make it visually resonant.”
The star continues, “The first line is a bit of a play on words, as if this is the final conversation being had. But then it takes a turn and you realize that it’s not that at all. This is a difficult one for me to listen to, but I’m glad I wrote what I did.”
We appreciate the depth that Occurrence share, and the cohesive tapestry of sound that they create with The Remote Past Tense! Needless to say, it has us very excited to hear the rest of the incoming album, Slow Violence. In the meantime, one can stream the four songs that have been released, including Universe Moves so Fast, Fudge, and of course, Heels over Head!
