We just discovered Codefendants and their brand new album, This is Crime Wave, and we simply cannot get enough! The ten-track record is full of dynamic production, intricate nuances, poetic prowess and cerebral depth.
The entire record is a must-listen, every single track is a stand-out. We learn that the project is the brainchild of Fat Mike of NOFX, which explains the mastery contained within the record,
The outfit came to be when Get Dead vocalist Sam King’s graffiti crew were giving tattoos and making flash art to raise money to help rapper Ceschi Ramos when he was in prison. Months later they met at the Gilman Street Project in Berkeley, California. They bonded, talking about their love of hip-hop and punk rock.
The creators confess that the intention of the record is based around “a desire to make an album that sounded like nothing else; a completely genre-fluid album, a cross between hip hop, new-wave, flamenco, and the Beatles”, dubbed “Crime Wave”. Codefendants have also released a series of high production value and cinematic music videos to amplify the already refined and subversive universe that they have created.
Needless to say we are in awe of the entire Codefendants project, it’s unique nature, the cohesive tapestry of sound, and most of all the vibrant nature of the prose, which is profound and simultaneously transcendental with eye-opening, conscious lyricism and self-realized depth that is simply unrivalled. We have added Abscessed to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from the legendary outfit!
