Setting the tone with textured vocal add libs, fused with a luscious, acoustic guitar performance, mase J opens head//heart with the existential lyrics, “Dead, I wish I was dead and cold, I wish I was dead, I wish I was dead and cold…”
With a unique sonic nuance, the main vocal floats in as mase J shares introspective prose about his feelings with reference to the muse of the opus, and “juggling ego with romance”, touching on profound themes as he shares his mind and spirit with those fortunate enough to connect. His words are designed “shed light on the grief that coexists with both toxic masculinity and vulnerability.”
We appreciate the his intricate flow, his range, and charismatic performance, as well as the philosophical depth that the rising artist conveys. We learn that mase J has been dedicated to building up within the local scene in Derby in the United Kingdom. head//heart is the first song from his upcoming EP, photodump//exit left, and the single is produced by POPPA.
mase J confesses, “This song is about being torn between head and heart, love and ego. I wrote it when I was younger in a relationship going through trust issues, and found it hard to gain the trust of my other half.”
The visionary artist continues, “I was in a space where I was susceptible to the outside world and it would influence my decisions causing my relationship to break down. At the same time as I was giving my all trying to make things work, I was torn. I lost a lot of love and learnt a lot of lessons. Hoping this theme is transparent in my lyrics.”
We love what mase J is sharing with his artistry, and have added head//heart to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the star, and anticipate the release of his upcoming EP!
