We have been intently following the rise of The Qwarks and their unfiltered brand of art rock, so when we learned that the Brighton-based stars had just released the new single, Brunch at the End of the World, we couldn’t wait to listen and feed back!
Immersing us with surround sound percussion in the shape of our planet, followed by an alternative rock meet Brit-pop guitar soundscape, The Qwarks sing, “Our feet scurry down the church road, the dust from the blast, everything is so cold…”, as they set the narrative tone for Brunch at the End of the World.
The opus expands with poetic prowess, something that comes naturally to The Qwarks, and a unique vibe of post apocalyptic storytelling laced with satire, which has us absolutely mesmerized.
The band, which consists of Phil Johnstone, Simon Young, and Nick Flowers, elaborate on the subject of the track by telling us, “The song takes off from where [our] last album finished; the catastrophe has happened, but when it seems there is no hope is there not something defiant, something so courageous, about the determination to brunch?”
In their hyperreality, we learn that “the old world is behind them, and there’s really nothing to lose but the chains.” The band confess that this track combines the psychedelic and experimental of all their favourites like Cardiacs, Dead Kennedys, Zappa, Primus and so on, with their love of pop music, but as always with The Qwarks, the dimension that they are creating, is unique to their own, and that is precisely why we connect with the innovators.
This year, The Qwarks will be releasing a series of singles and collaborating with an exciting array of acts. In the meantime, we have added Brunch at the End of the World to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their wider discography!
