We recently featured Blue Shirt Charlie as they reflected on real-life tragedies in the emotive single, Shelter, so when we heard that they had just released a brand new single, we couldn’t wait to experience it! Drawing us in with a rhythmic guitar soundscape, Blue Shirt Charlie open Crazy Woman, with metaphorical yet situational lyrics, as they take us on a charismatic and visual journey with their prose.
We immediately connect with their signature alternative country soundscape and the narrative-based style of storytelling that Blue Shirt Charlie convey with their universe.
The opus expands with imaginative depth, and we learn that Crazy Woman is the band’s “most personal track”, and that the lyrics, “reflect on the lost moments of a relationship tangled in mental health struggles.” The rising stars reference the work of the late Leonard Cohen with the quote, “There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in.”
At the dawn of the alt-country movement, Blue Shirt Charlie garnered attention in cities and towns along Central Texas’ Brazos River and that momentum continues to grow. The band cite influences including Elliott Smith, Steve Earle, early U2 and the Old 97’s, but as we noted before, it is clear that Blue Shirt Charlie are creating an identity of their own.
We love the hook-laden themes that Richie Sessions, Russ Chapman, and Lex Lipsitz touch upon with their artistry, including “hope and renewal tempered by scar tissue from divorce, war deployments, and bolt-from- the-blue tragedies”, and the instrumental performance are simply out of this world.
The band has new music slated for 2023, meanwhile we have added Crazy Woman to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their debut single Shelter!
