Last year, we had the honour of featuring Alexander Saint for his reflective and self-realized single, Better, so when we heard that the rising star had just released Bad Friends, we couldn’t wait to experience it!
Drawing us in with an intimate frequency and immersive guitar performance, Alexander Saint opens Bad Friends with an expressive concept as he sings with wisdom, “When you stumble in the dark of the evening, jumping fences of homes you don’t own, and you laugh at another’s misfortune, in the end you’re the butt of the joke…”
We are immediately enamoured by the star’s timbre and charismatic delivery. We love the message of the song which Alexander confesses is “a song with duality”.
The artist continues, “It talks about my own struggles with inner demons always trying to convince me I’m never good enough and escaping them through alcohol. It can also be taken literally, navigating relationships with people in life you thought had your best interests in mind, but never show up when you need them. It really gave me a true appreciation of the good people I have, compared to the ones who will kick me when I’m down.”
The depth and authenticity that Alexander Saint is tangible and we appreciate the intellectual and philosophical nature of his words. We learn that Bad Friends was written in 2019, and is designed “for people struggling to believe in themselves, who are constantly haunted by shadows in their minds.”
The story of the song ends with a cryptic final note as Alexander sings, “Bad friends, bad friends. Bad friends are gonna be my end”, which we learn is him “recognizing that it might already be too late for himself.”
We love the harmonies, and choral moments, as well as the emotive strings arrangement. Naturally, we have added Bad Friends to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Alexander Saint including Lazergun, and The Light.
