Setting the tone with an intricate guitar performance, textured drums and an astral harmonica, Minda Lacy opens The Eyeball Song with introspective prose as she asks, “What’s up with time, and what’s up with you?”
The opus expands with as our protagonist shares metaphorical and conceptual lyricism with charm and charisma. We appreciate her poetic prowess and the authenticity that she conveys.
Speaking on how the song came to be, Minda confesses, “Before I wrote The Eyeball Song, I was having a very strange thought about whether or not it would be possible to touch your eyeball to another persons eyeball. From that thought I started contemplating the nature of human intimacy, and how it can feel impossible to get close enough to another human being because we are innately alone in our individual bodies and consciousnesses.”
We love the philosophical nature of her artistry, and cannot get enough of the music video, directed by Minda’s co-producer Jon Wohfert, where the creators painted beach balls as eyes, and Minda’s friends bury her in the garden. The time-lapse style filming is engaging and contemporary, and we love the artist’s performance which adds dimensionality to her already high concept universe.
The star cites Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Andrew Bird, Bob Dylan, and The Be Good Tanya, as well as Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin as some of her influences, which we can feel come though in her art, although it is clear that Minda Lacy is creating a sound of her own.
We have added The Eyeball Song to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Minda Lacy‘s wider discography including her EP, Worms.
