Establishing the mood with subversive electric guitar energy, Meat in Space opens Chromium Dioxide with an industrial vibe and a hybrid-grunge vocal reminiscent of the 90s, as he shares conceptual lyricism and metaphorical depth. He delivers the opening, introspective prose, “Searchin’ for somethin’ to affirm my position, and I’ll take the first thing that comes along…”
The journey expands with a unique sonic design for the vocals, and Meat in Space confesses, “I had forgotten that I sang into a metal watering can mic’d with an SM58, to get a kind of lo-fi reverb sound until I looked back at my camera roll a few months later. There’s something about the process of recording to tape that always pushes me to explore new recording techniques and to experiment with different approaches to creative songwriting.”
We love the originality in the creative process, which is tangible in the final result of the song, the message of which we learn “serve[s] as a mildly sarcastic indictment of intellectual laziness and unwillingness to budge on a strongly held belief. We’re all high on bias. We do the bare minimum of research to validate our strongly held beliefs, accepting seemingly anything as proof.”
Meat in Space tells us that the lyrics and title of the track emerged whilst he was “tracking the fuzz blasted guitar, staring at the cassette case of the tape I was recording onto. The tape was a Type II, High Bias tape, formulated with Chromium Dioxide.”
There is no doubt that what Meat in Space is creating is highly original, but we also love the nostalgic edge that he brings to life with his sound. Speaking on his influences, the star says, “I’m heavily influenced by early 90s heavyweights like Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, shoegaze, punk, stoner metal, garage rock, slacker rock, experimental rock, Spanish guitar, fiercely DIY artists, genre bending creative guitarists, musicians with a strong melodic sensibility and honest lyricists.” With this fusion, there is absolutely no doubt that Meat in Space is creating a universe of his own.
We have added Chromium Dioxide to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Meat in Space!
This is my first single from my forthcoming EP of bombastic rock, all painstakingly recorded to tape, with a raw, fuzzy, guitar-led DIY sensibility. In the wheelhouse of Ty Segall, Wavves, Thee Oh Sees, Dino Jr.
