Setting the tone with an elegant electric guitar performance and rolling drums, Cody James opens Sacrificing Dreams with a timeless energy and a sense of nostalgia as he sings the introspective lyrics, “I’ve got that same old feeling coming alive… I try to climb back up when the mood takes a dive…”
The opus expands into a meaningful look inwards, as the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist artist shares his perspective and soul. Fusing elements of pop and rock with jazz and blues and his Midwestern authenticity, we are enthralled by the soundscape that Cody James creates.
We learn that Cody plays and arranges every instrument, and it is no surprise that he is booked and busy as a guitarist, playing over 250 shows a year. This level of instrumental mastery is tangible within his own artistry.
Cody James started learning guitar at age seven, and began playing professionally at fourteen. He tells us how he grew up with bands like Kiss, Nirvana, and Black Sabbath, and also takes influence from neo-soul artists including Jordan Mackampa, Gary Clark Jr, John Mayer, and Yola, which we can feel come through in his music, although it is clear that Cody is creating a sonic universe of his own.
The guitar solos are incredible, understandably, and we love Cody James‘s range and the conscious lyricism that he shares. We have added Sacrificing Dreams to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Cody James‘s wider discography including Everything in Me, Drift, Living on the Breeze, and more.
