We recently covered Domax for his mesmerizing and psychedelic 10-minute opus, Bollé, and during our wider exploration of the talented star’s artistry, we realised that he had also released an EP called New Moon, so in order to celebrate the current Pisces new moon, here’s our breakdown of the record!
Kicking off with the title track, we are immersed into a pulsating, glistening, dark wave universe with addictive melodies and intricate sound design which feels dimensional. New Moon is high octane and directional, taking us on a transcendental journey, something that we have come to associate with Domax‘s creations. Evocative elements and dynamics expand the track, whilst the psychedelic architecture of Domax‘s vision is cemented on the opus.
Next up is Origin Theory, which feels cohesive with the opener, albeit at a slower BPM. Laser sounds surround us whilst a synthetic bassline immerses us further. What we love about Domax, is his ability to create something highly unique, non-repetitive, yet simultaneously aligned to his bigger picture. Energy Test takes on a more chilled vibe, showcasing a trip-hop hybrid vibe with padded drums and melodic synths communicating with each other in a somewhat playful guise. We deeply appreciate the more meditative nature of this piece.
Homeslice is up next, and once again demonstrates Domax‘s ability to create a glistening soundscape which is both invigorating, and full of poetic ebbs and flows, to maximise emotional impact. We love the breakdown of the song which is elegant and leaves us wanting more. Taking on a sexier and more seductive nature is Guava. Still featuring unique synth work to really inspire us and push the boundaries of creativity, Domax demonstrates his depth on the track and allows us a ambient and Eastern reprise.
Nebula picks up the pace once more whilst maintaining a meditative core, and we love the journey of the final which also features and art-rock edge and cyber 8-bit melodies which lean into the more playful side of Domax’s creativity.
We learn that all of the tracks are written and recorded at Domax‘s studio in London, where the star performs on a Monopoly Synthesiser with a live drummer. Speaking on his intention, Domax says, “I wanted to make an EP with big tunes, big beat and loads of energy all surrounded with a rich lush sound world.”
Domax cites Apex Twin, Neu, The Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kraftwerk, Fela Cuti and Brian Eno as some of his influences, although as we said about the artist before, there is no doubt that what Domax is unique to his own vision and expression.
We have added the track, New Moon, to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Domax over the current new moon in Pisces, and anticipate future releases from the artist.
