Setting the tone with a panning frequency, intricate percussion and acoustic guitar, Alternate Jane opens Higher Ground with a sense of ethereal dimensionally and intrigue, as she softly hums fused cohesively with a pulsating, rising synth.
The opus expands as Alternate Jane shares the expansive opening lyrics, “Come lift me up to my Higher Ground”, laced with astral harmonies. We immediately appreciate the dynamic nature of the song as it evolves with an alternative rock vibe and and emotive performance from our protagonist.
We deeply connect with Alternate Jane‘s expressive delivery and the metaphorical constructs of her prose. She ask us, and her listeners to ponder the question, “When the person you love isn’t who you think he or she is, will you follow them into the rabbit hole and discover the whole truth?”
The rising star confesses, “Higher Ground is about feeling alive again after a surprise turn of events in life giving new purpose to one’s life, and a chance meeting of someone you never thought you’d encounter who changes your whole perspective on things.”
Alternate Jane continues, “It’s the excitement and exhilaration of new love, one that sometimes blinds us to a person’s flaws or make our judgment momentarily poorer. To the point of the main character in the music video not realizing the true nature of the female protagonist’s job, and he has to decide whether he can accept it and proceed with a potential relationship with her.”
We learn that the composition, which is produced with Melvin Rijlaarsdam is “inspired by music from James Bond films and the mystery genre, [and] combines the noir theme with a romantic twist”, the artist also cites Garbage, Michelle Branch, Sixpence None the Richer, Elliott Smith, Evanescence, Paramore, Muse, Linkin Park, Nirvana, and Alicia Keys as some of her influences, We can feel these references come to life from the doctor-musician from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, although it is clear that Alternate Jane is creating a sonic universe of her own.
We love what Alternate Jane is creating and the depth of emotion and narrative that goes into her artistry. Higher Ground has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Alternate Jane‘s previous two singles, Confidence and Skype Love.
