JUNK share assertive commentary on ageism with epic and expansive new single, They Call me Old Man

We recently featured JUNK for their experimental dose of musical narcotics, Chromatose, so when we heard that the rising duo consisting of Dirty D and Dubl A had released a brand new social commentary on ageism, titled They Call me Old Man, we simply had to immerse ourselves.

Setting the tone with an astral saxophone frequency fused with the prose, “This one goes out to all the old school, hard working, hustling players who have made it this far…”, we swiftly realise that They Call me Old Man is the first song from JUNK which features full lyrics!

The opus expands with intricate flow to share the perspective of JUNK after someone made an ageist comment. Ageism is simply not talked about enough, it exists in society, but is also deeply rooted in the music industry. One would think that with more time on planet Earth, wisdom and knowledge has the chance to expand and people would respect older people more, yet here we are in 2023, still trying to decode ageism within the masses. Therefore and needless to say, we are grateful to JUNK for sharing their perspective and experience with the release of They Call me Old Man.

The moving prose that is shared on They Call me Old Man is accompanied with an enigmatic and dimensional soundscape, something that we have learnt to love and admire from JUNK! The delivery of the lyrics is fierce and assertive. The duo share the words, “Don’t judge a book by its cover, don’t always believe what you see…”, and even some words in Spanish!

We love the glistening bell nuances, and the sound of a puff of smoke as the pair reference the healing cannabis plant. Their sonic design of jazz and funk is refined, and the vocal mix is so incredible that it makes us wonder why we never heard lyrics from JUNK before!

JUNK tell us, “It’s just what we have to say, nothing more. Created again to self satisfy our own musical desires.” With reference to the topic of ageism, they say, “Yes that dirty little secret that people never want to address. Well, this is what we think about people who even consider age a number. When you seen an old man, remember what I tell you.”

We are in awe of JUNK‘s message and the intricacy of the soundscape that they share. We have added They Call me Old Man to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Chromatose, and anticipate future releases from the creative duo!
