JONA VARK shares track-by-track for their intricate and emotive new EP, del corazón

Last year, we featured JONA VARK for their collaboration with E. Alvin, and his single Psychosex featuring Davy Munster, so when we heard that the rising star was set to release del corazón – a three track EP in time for Valentine’s Day, we simply had to listen and learn more!

Below, JONA VARK shares a track-by-track breakdown of each of the Spanish language songs featured on the EP, including the title track del corazón, no quiero saber, and yayo. We love the artist’s poetic prowess and the emotional depth that they share with their intricate and warm soundscape.

JONA VARK is a first generation Honduran-American artist who was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. We learn that JONA’s love for the arts began with growing up in a city full of culture. In their early years, JONA began their artistic journey with visual media and theatre.

The artist’s musical journey began in college, where they released a mixtape in English and Spanish, adopting a cosign from Tech N9ne and Dua Saleh. Their music has a broad range of genres from bachata ballads to dark vampiric house music, and we love the energy of this record where JONA VARK taps into their ancestral roots to create a charming and profound series of cohesive releases.

del corazón

I wrote this song in the Spring of 2022, as the title track to a bigger project I was working on. I felt euphoric one day, and immediately heard this song in my head. I would hum the lyrics all day long and then finally decided to lay down a vocal track over some simple lo-fi drums, building the harmonies and everything else until it was finally ready to be heard. It naturally came to me from the heart, and I loved the idea of this title. The song itself is written about my heart, and how this project came to me and how much I love it.

no quiero saber

no quiero saber came about as a early part two to my single sin ti. The main inspiration for this song was my early childhood, and all the fun bachata songs I would hear at family parties. It’s written about a toxic relationship I was dealing with, and finally learning to let go of someone who’s making your life harder.

yayo

My childhood was a big inspiration for this project. I grew up with a close but damaged family dynamic. My parents divorced and our family began to tear apart, and it affected me heavily. I didn’t speak to some of my family for a very long time because it just hurt too much to accept the reality of us not being together anymore. My mom is my best friend and my everything, and has always been supportive of me. I wanted to include her voice in the song because she has always been so kind and loving to me, and it’s something I wanted to immortalize in my art.
