Setting the tone with an industrial guitar soundscape with touches of distortion for added drama, Kim Bertrand opens motherfaker with the a sonic level of intrigue that we might expect from a song with such an evocative title.
The opus expands with a textured vocal performance and metallic elements, as the rising rebel shares a subversive vibe to bring her message to life. motherfaker is designed to be “relevant to the instafamous sadgirl in all of us…”, and the composition does just that with Kim’s cerebral prose and lyrical metaphors.
We immediately appreciate the authenticity that Kim Bertrand delivers with motherfaker as a concept. She shares her wisdom by confessing, “Every twenty-something with a cellphone wants to be rich and famous, but fame and fortune aren’t the package deal they used to be.” Kim adds with depth, “Perception is everything. If you want to make it big in the clout-chasing economy, you have to fake it!”
motherfaker comes with a retro-tinged music video which takes us on a psychedelic trip through the artist’s mind and spirit as she shares he message. “It’s like the mind’s eye on crack”, says the star from New York as she reflects on her creativity.
“The irony of promoting myself with an aesthetic designed to critique music commercialism isn’t lost on me, it’s fucking delicious”, exclaims Kim as she ponders on the current situation. She cites Nirvana, Hole, The Smashing Pumpkins and Pixies as some of her reference, although it is clear that Kim Bertrand is expanding a universe of her own.
Kim leaves us with the words, “I like noise. I like punk. I like William S. Burroughs and big fuckin’ drums. I like basslines to groove and guitars to shriek atonally. I want your ears to bleed, your body to move, and your neighbours to call the cops.”
We have added motherfaker to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Kim Bertrand‘s album, Facebook Girl, and anticipate her future releases inspired by TikTok and Twitter.
