Setting the tone with vocal samples and a textured crescendo, Occurrence open Heels over Head with dimensionality and intrigue, as they share the optimistic prose, “Woke up feeling good, about the world and about you…”
The opus expands with charm and charisma to take us on a journey through the minds and spirits of the artists as they share their perspective and poetic prowess.
We learn that Heels over Head also features Kip Berman on guitar, and the song is taken from Occurrence‘s upcoming double album, Slow Violence, out on April 7.
Speaking on the release, composer Ken Urban confesses, “We wanted to make a grand statement, to be more expansive, to fully reflect our collective experiences, traumatic and ecstatic, over the past two years.”
Co-vocalist Cat Hollyer comments with depth, “This is a hard album for us to listen to because we were so vulnerable in the lyrics, talking about stuff that we normally never do, whether it’s pain or failure or joy or sex. As we three have become closer, our lyrics have come to reflect that closeness.”
The trio, which also includes Johnny Hager, inform us that, “The term ‘slow violence’ comes from environmental studies. It describes ecological harm that happens imperceptibly in a community; you only realize that it’s happening once it’s too late. That feels to us like an apt metaphor for the things we’re singing about on this album.”
We appreciate the depth and authenticity that Occurrence share with their artistry, and have added Heels over Head to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their existing discography and anticipate the release of Slow Violence!
