Setting the tone with a luscious classic rock hybrid energy, The Century Band and Woodstock, NY based artist Marc Delgado open January with intrigue, a sense of nostalgia and the situational lyrics, “It’s a long cold January, middle of the night, I just can’t stop thinking about when you were alive…”
We immediately appreciate the personal nature of the story, and the authenticity in the prose as the creators confess, “January is a song about getting older. It’s a song about life and loss and coming to terms with the natural world around you. It’s a song about feeling lost on your own journey through the inevitable but learning how to accept the wonder.”
The depth is tangible, and we love the charismatic nuances of the performances, both instrumental and vocal. The opus comes with a charming music video showcasing an emotive performance of the track in a relatable way, along with footage demonstrating the creation of the composition.
We connect with the chord changes, and the luscious mix of the song which evokes a sense of authentic nostalgia that we cannot get enough of. We learn that producer and band leader Dan Klug met Marc Delgado at a gig in Harlem around 2015, they recount, “Dan [was] playing drums in a band in one room and Marc [was] playing in another.” They say that “in between sets the two struck up a conversation and became quick friends, staying connected ever since.”
“When Dan came up with the framework and general themes for January he immediately thought of Marc to make the song better and his voice to bring it to life”, the band recount. Marc then brought a demo of the tune to his collaborator and producer, Justin Tracy in Woodstock and the two of them reworked the song to its final version.
The creators confirm that the song “speaks from a mature and curious perspective, having context as to what life has to offer but not having all the answers, and always turning to the world for guidance.”
We love what The Century Band and Marc Delgado are sharing with their collaborative effort, and we have added January to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discographies of both the band and artist.
