Setting the tone with crowd noise at an airport with a tannoy announcement, Overlap open Flight 608 with a stunning electric guitar performance and introspective lyricism. The opus expands into a meaningful and emotive alternative rock energy, as Overlap take us on a cerebral trip with their narrative-driven and personal brand of storytelling.
We immediately appreciate the tangible authenticity and poetic prowess that Overlap share with Flight 608, as well as the dynamic nature of the composition which holds a sense of timeless nostalgia.
Speaking on the message of the song, the band confess, “Flight 608 is about a man traveling to go meet his ex-girlfriend, who left him because he hid important things, aspects of his life, to her. He’s been alone for a long time before meeting her, and he was enjoying the loneliness., but he fell in love with her and he was not used to share his feelings.”
They continue with depth, “He had a kind of a dark past and decided to hide things from her. Obviously, she eventually found out and left him, not because of his past, but because he lied to her and didn’t trust her. He’s on the plane, but he’s still not sure if he wants to make the effort to apology or if he would be better alone for the rest of his life. At the end he makes up his mind, he decides that he loves her and would never find a love like this one ever again. He will go and make this right. Then the plane crashes.”
Elaborating on the soundscape influence of the piece, the emerging Canadian band tell us, “This song is highly influenced by rock and post-grunge from the 90s and early 00s”. They reference that Incubus, Chevelle, Rise Against The Machine, and Pink Floyd are some of their influences, although it is clear that Overlap are creating a universe of their own.
Overlap is made up of Hugo Goyet on vocals, Nicolas Paradis and Samuel Cloutier performing guitars, Ben Jacob playing bass, and Simon Langevin delivering drums.
It’s always refreshing to hear a high quality grunge-alternative rock hybrid, which is a sound that is making a comeback with a lot of rising artists, so it feels like Overlap are on the right track, and we cannot wait to hear more from the band. We have added Flight 608 to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Overlap!
