Setting the tone with immersive and intricate piano, Lisa Murray opens Woman in a World with atmospheric vocals and introspective lyrics as she sings, “I’ve always been a pacifist, but now I’m wondering if I should carry a weapon, for my own protection, cos I can’t walk alone at night without fearing for my life…”
We immediately appreciate Lisa Murray‘s timbre and message. The perspective is quite heartbreaking, as all human beings should be free to self express and walk alone in safety, but we live in complicated times.
The intention of the opus is profound, and the way that Lisa Murray conveys her perspective is full of poetic prowess and authenticity. Speaking on the release, the talented artist confesses, “It made me feel really unsafe and angry that my safety cannot be guaranteed because of my gender.”
We also learn that the song was motivated by a spate of violence against women in the UK and Ireland, followed quickly by the overturning of Roe vs. Wade in the USA.
Elaborating on the importance of the song, Lisa tells us, “Woman in a World is a reflection of the inner thoughts and feelings I have as a woman in today’s day and age. At a time when biases, sexism & brutal violence against women still happens across the globe, this song is an uncomfortable expression of the things people don’t talk openly about.”
Expanding on her intention, the visionary singer continues, “My aspiration for the song is to raise awareness about the fears and frustrations of the women of this world for those who don’t understand them. Unfortunately, many women will resonate with the feelings and themes expressed in the song. I also hope this song will strike a chord with them, and help them know they are not alone.”
