Setting the tone with intricate acoustic acoustic guitar, Fat Cat Affair opens Up At Dawn with a pristine vocal from Clay Agnew, as he sings the introspective lyrics, “When the moon leaves the dark sky, colourful dreams still tend to fly…”
The opus expands into a luscious ballad with theatrical pop energy, fusing vocal synths and rippling piano, which further dimensionalise the composition.
Speaking on the release of Up At Dawn, Fat Cat Affair confesses that the song is designed “for waking up with your loved one.” The enigmatic artist who identifies as a musical cat continues, “I was inspired by this girl I once met and coupled it with an old melody and some chords that a friend of mine wrote a long time ago. I rewrote the lyrics, added a few sections and here we are.”
The instrumental segments of the song are sensational, with an out-of-this-world electric guitar solo (which you can watch here) and a moving performance on the keys. We learn that Fat Cat spent his early years moving from city to city, “looking for other cats to meow with.” His travels took him from the smoky jazz bars of Paris to the sweaty rock clubs of Hamburg and underground blues joints in Warsaw.
Up At Dawn is about “finding a purpose again, being inspired by someone and falling in love with the moment.” We deeply appreciate the intention and creative identity of Fat Cat Affair and have added the single to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore the existing discography of the brilliantly talented feline.
