Setting the tone with a luscious guitar soundscape and an incredible vocal performance, siblings Sophie Dorsten and Alex Dorsten open Whisper in the Dark with intrigue and metaphorical lyricism.
The opus expands into a meaningful performance laced with charm and charisma, as Sophie Dorsten showcases her hypnotizing timbre in an ocean of strings, bells and strummed guitar.
Speaking on their creative process, Sophie confesses, “I write the lyrics and melodies while Alex creates the music. When we perform I sing and and play acoustic guitar and Alex plays guitar (switches between acoustic and electric) and also plays the kick drum with one foot and the tambourine with the other.”
With reference to the meaning of Whisper in the Dark, Sophie says, “I wrote this song about a toxic and manipulative person who is never far; always ready to use you for their benefit.”
We immediately appreciate the authenticity that they share, and Sophie’s vocal performance is simply out-of-this-world, cohesively fused with intricate and expansive instrumentation. The duo cite Eleni Drake, Billie Eilish, From Indian Lakes, and Norah Jones as influences, although it is clear that Sophie Dorsten and Alex Dorsten are creating a sonic universe of their own.
We have added Whisper in the Dark to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Sophie Dorsten and Alex Dorsten‘s discographies including Mountain Song, and anticipate further releases from the sibling duo.
