Setting the tone with immersive synth keys, Alas de Liona opens Spirals with atmospheric vocals and metaphorical, introspective lyricism as she sings, “Bitter taste when the sun goes down, carried back to mistakes I made, dark inside my head…”
The opus expands into a meaningful, indie-pop energy as Alas de Liona shares poetic prowess, emotional depth and a journey through her spirit and mind.
We appreciate ethereal energy of Spirals and Alas de Liona‘s intricately layered vocals. The guitar performance with textured drums is exquisite, and the electronic sonic design really adds a sense of dimensionality to the already mesmerizing performance.
We learn that Alas de Liona hails from a small town in the Mojave Desert and creates her dreamlike songs from her unique experiences. Her final year at University of California, Santa Barbara saw her head to Edinburgh in Autumn 2019, to complete her course at University of Edinburgh.
Alas also had her first headline shows with a three-piece band at Glasgow Glad Café and Edinburgh Voodoo Rooms and “a couple of packed out solo acoustic Edinburgh pub shows.” She has also recorded two new songs with her band at Post Electric Studios in Leith with producer Rod Jones, and is now back in her Mojave Desert hometown in California, but plans to return to Scotland in 2023.
We have added Spirals to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Alas de Liona‘s wider discography including her recently release, Vortices.
