Setting the tone with glitched vocals apologising fused with intricate drums, ✦kenji✦ opens Questions with charm and atmospheric vocals as he sings, “Told you I’d be here for you, wait for me, stay a little while…”
The opus expands into a contemporary pop soundscape with elements of futurism, and needless to say, we are obsessed. We appreciate ✦kenji✦‘s poetic prowess and vocal timbre, and the way that the track shifts moods a third of the way through to a down pitched slow mo ethereal vibe, where ✦kenji✦ literally questions “Is this real?”
The dimensionality of the composition is pure genius and hits us like cyber waves, before the track expands into its original form for the reprise. ✦kenji✦ confesses that the narrative of the song outlines “the struggles of escaping toxic relationships, and how trying to get away from these interactions might prove difficult.”
We learn that the song is set to be accompanied by an “eerily nostalgic” video directed by Graffiti, which includes trippy liminal spaces and flashing visuals. Questions itself was produced by Roku Beats and ✦kenji✦ himself.
✦kenji✦‘s previous successes throughout 2022 have attracted him a horde of cult-like fans, and features on editorials such as Apple Music’s Glitch playlist. We love what the artist is creating, and have added Questions to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whist we continue to stream ✦kenji✦ wider discography including Dreamlord and No Lie.
