Setting the tone with a whirring bassline and dimensional vocal textures saying, “I’m tired, haven’t slept for days… they put me on some meds…”. Guilherme Cosme opens Into a Boy with intrigue and a rippling harp.

The opus expands into an “experimental piece about mental issues, childhood trauma and religious brain washing”, as the artist takes us on a subversive journey through his psyche.

With echoing vocals, footsteps, glitched sounds and a dynamic soundscape, we are immersed and invited to go inward. Laced with minimalist moments and maximalist peaks, full of poetic prowess, an a genre expansive nature, the composition takes us on a profound and introspective journey.

Into a Boy comes with a powerful and cinematic choreographed visual performed by Aaron Shaw, which sees the protagonist bring Guilherme Cosme‘s narrative to life through the medium of dance. It is the reversed vocal segments that are particularly evocative. We are in awe of the lighting and how cohesive the sound design is with Aaron’s movement.

Guilherme Cosme is an avant-garde, experimental singer, composer and founder member of the post punk band Mary Bleeds. The artist found solace in art at a young age and was born and raised in Brazil. During his teens, the self-taught musician begun to write songs. He initially trained his voice by studying the work of Jazz greats like Andy Bey and the legendary Nina Simone.

In addition to his work with Mary Bleeds, Guilherme has produced a new solo EP titled Demon. The record is a dark and meditative collection of five songs written for voice and piano which finds the singer diving deep into his own battle with mental illness. He wrote these songs as catharsis while struggling with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. With his new record, Persephone and the Ghost Brother, the rising artist hopes to reach out to those who struggle with similar issues and to raise awareness of the pain and suffering many face in silence.

We appreciate the intention that he shares, and the single and album as a whole are a cathartic experienceif you are willing and ready to go that deep! We have added Into A Boy to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Guilherme Cosme‘s album, Persephone and the Ghost Brother.
