Setting the tone with a meditative synth and cerebral textures, RaSean Parks opens Black Venus with atmospheric vocals and a question, as he asks, “So what’s your sign, Black Venus? I wanna know you know I mean it, so what’s your sign, Black Venus?”
The opus expands into a dimensional soundscape, in line with the concept of the song, as RaSean Parks delivers wisdom and cosmic lyricism.
When discussing the release, RaSean Parks confesses that the composition is named after the Black Venus herself, Josephine Baker – the American-born, French vedette dancer, singer and actress.
He elaborates, “The song is a laid back strip club/party joint when the night is almost over and you’re having an intimate conversion with someone and you want to know why you have such a strong connection with them. the first verse a guessing game of me trying to figure out this girls sign while the second verse leans more towards me considering the girl is a reincarnated Josephine Baker. The chorus ‘shake something shake something’ was a reference to Josephine’s famous Banana Dance where she’d wear a banana skirt and literally shake her hips dancing around the stage.”
We appreciate the depth of RaSean Parks‘ lyricism and the poetic prowess that he shares as he seamlessly flows his way through trying to guess his confidant-for-the-night’s zodiac sign. The rising artist from Columbia, South Carolina cites Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Smino, Isaiah Rashad, and Ambre as his main influences, although it is clear that RaSean Parks is creating a universe of his own.
