Setting the tone with a genre expansive energy, Sour Taffy open Witch Doctor with intrigue, dimensionality and atmospheric vocals. The opus expands with sonic intricacy and a charismatic vocal performance into an indie-pop hybrid sound with elements of funk and jazz which have us hypnotized.
We appreciate the poetic prowess that the duo share with their collaborative debut. We learn that Sour Taffy is made up of Daniel Thompson and Nathaniel Aberdeen who both deliver guitars, bass, vocals, synths, production and mixing on the opus.
The duo cite Mac Demarco, Her’s, Mild High Club, Crumb, and Dayglow as some of their influences, although it is clear that they are creating a universe of their own.
Witch Doctor comes with a trippy and cerebral music video which allows the skillset of Sour Taffy to come to life with performance scenes, as the same time as taking us on an adventure in line with the concept of the lyricism.
The duo tell us that the visual is “inspired by cheesy horror films from the 30s to 60s.” By universal design, the pair confess, “The birds in the music video swarming the sky and adding that horror element to it. We had never seen anything like it. Hundreds of birds just swarming this area by where we were filming.”
We love the energy and authenticity as well as tangible talent that Sour Taffy are sharing with their debut, and have added Witch Doctor to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate further releases from the Nashville-based duo.
