Setting the tone with a soft riser, Jessica Woodlee opens Dairy Aisle with atmospheric vocals as she delivers situational and metaphorical lyricism, fused with an ethereal soundscape and dimensional percussion.
We appreciate the poetic prowess as Jessica Woodlee reminisces with and the tangible charisma that she delivers on the opus. The rising artist and Berklee College of Music student confesses that the song is “a bitter-sweet pop song about a relationship that didn’t come to fruition.”
Considering the growing majority’s stance with dairy, we appreciate her analogy and believe in the futurism of her “what if” message, with the optimistic side of her lyricism translating into a kind and loving dairy-free future, whereby the elements that can stay in the past are the violence of animal agriculture and exploitation. Perhaps Jessica Woodlee‘s connected future is indeed a “vegan ice cream”.
During the pandemic, Jessica took the opportunity to expand her range as a songwriter by challenging herself to write a song everyday. We learn that as a child Jessica had constant exposure to the greats; Ella Fitzgerald, Carole King, Clapton, Muddy Waters and Hendrix. At that time she had just begun playing guitar, piano, bass and violin. Propelled by her high emotional sensitivity, Jessica soon began writing her own music, leaning on modern pop writers to show her the way.
This path of wide-eyed wonder and self-discovery lead her to many of her current inspirations, such as Taylor Swift, Maisie Peters, Alessia Cara and Maggie Rogers, which we can feel come through in her artistry, although it is clear that she is creating a universe of her own.
Jessica can often be found rocking the stages of the northeast with her band or in the studio laying down new tracks for her upcoming album, titled DIVINE. Jessica released the first single from the album, Burn My Baggage in late August, which we have been exploring, whilst we have also added the conceptual Dairy Aisle to our New Music Spotlight playlist.
