Setting the tone with an immersive vocal texture and an arpeggiated, psychedelic rising melody, Steep Steps and Ami Dang open Stories on a Page with atmosphere and metaphorical lyricism. Sitar riffs add dimensionality to the piece as the opus expands into a dream-pop meets folk hybrid energy.
Lyrical highlights include the empowering hook, “Heroes far away, always for tomorrow but we only live today…”, and the optimistic outro, “The seed somebody planted with the hope that’s in their heart, only grows inside a mind and then it dies if no one starts, putting concepts onto concrete pushing keys into locks, you’re the seed nobody planted and the answer that you sought…”
We learn that the collaborative track is mixed in cutting-edge Dolby Atmos to create an immersive, three-dimensional sound that highlights the arrangement’s thick layers of ethereal vocals, sitar, cello, and synthesizers, and we are obsessed.
It is no surprise that Ami Dang has already been featured by Pitchfork and the Guardian, we appreciate her vocal timbre and prowess, as well as her incredible skill on the sitar. The composition highlights the band’s style of crashing organic and synthetic instruments together and using mixed metaphors to create a provocative piece.
Steep Steps are currently working on film scores and are set to release two more singles this year with other featured vocalists. In the meantime, we have added Stories on a Page to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore the wider discographies of both Steep Steps and Ami Dang!
