Setting the tone with strummed, electric guitar expanding with pulsating drums, Deep Talk open If I Said I Was Changing with a garage rock energy and introspective lyricism.
The opus expands with charisma, into a thought-provoking journey into the psyche and human condition, and for that we are grateful. Laced with poetic prowess, Deep Talk describe themselves as an alt-pop duo whose “slow burn thumping melancholy transports you to the glowing neon lights of rainy city nights”, and we definitely feel that come through with their vibe. The depth in their moniker is tangible.
The band is comprised of talented San Francisco singer-songwriter Christina Li and Portland musician Jordan Maslov, who brings his bright electric guitars and sinuous melodies to life on the track, which they tell us is designed to be “music you can lip sync into the mirror when it gets dark.”
The duo cite inspiration ranging from Mitski to Charlotte Brontë to Talking Heads, which we can feel come through in their artistry, although there is no doubt that Deep Talk are creating a universe of their own.
We learn that living 600 miles apart, Christina and Jordan collaborate asynchronously through an online songwriting process that sprouts songs from the barest ideas. They confess, “Each time one of us comes back the next day to a song in progress, it feels fresh and new, like a cobbler waking up to find shoes magically mended overnight. You never know what to expect.”
We appreciate the authenticity and passion that the duo share with their vision, and have added If I Said I Was Changing to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore Deep Talk‘s wider discography!
