Setting the tone with intricate acoustic guitar, The Lonely Together open City Lights with as sense of timelessness, and the introspective lyrics, “I don’t know how this started, I don’t want this to end, but do you want me?”
The opus expands into a thought-provoking, romantic and emotive journey as the Scottish dream rockers deliver a wistful and charming soundscape with depth and authenticity.
We appreciate the poetic prowess that The Lonely Together share with their artistry, namely Mike Baillie’s tender lyricism, accompanied by an epic and dimensional string arrangement courtesy of The Cairn String Quartet, plus drums from Scott Kelman of Aberdeen band The Little Kicks.
We learn that the track is produced by Rod Jones (Idlewild/Hamish Hawk/Katie Gregson-MacLeod) and Baillie himself. A lyrical highlights is the emotive, “I’ve never been so worried, and I’ve never felt so scared, in the knowledge that I cannot be there…” before rippling drums generate an expansive nature to the sentiment that City Lights evokes.
We are here for The Lonely Together‘s sound and message, and have added City Lights to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to explore their wider discography including Be Strong Frances and Congregation from their 2021 album, Everything Viewed Backwards Through The Rearviewmirror.
