We recently featured Oneo Fakind for their cinematic and immersive new EP, Life in the Background, so when we heard they were releasing the brand new single, Medicinal, we couldn’t wait to experience it.
Establishing the mood with metallic textures and a subversive, industrial soundscape, Oneo Fakind open Medicinal with vibrancy and intricacy. There is the sound of percussion akin to money which feels like a call for abundance, and the opus expands into the dimensional synthscape that we can come to love from Oneo Fakind. We appreciate the trip that we are being taken on.
There is a minimalist moment with almost ancient nature sounds, before a panning and cerebral melodic synth fused with a rising organ transfix us on a deeper level.
Space-esque commentary is heard in the background, whilst the composition continues to evolve and expand in dimensionality and tangibility. We love how anthemic and arresting the overall vibe is of the piece, the constant ebbs and flows, builds anticipation as the piece reaching a meditative final reprise.
Medicinal is designed for just that – a cathartic meditation and healing moment. It comes with a sibling track, You Disappear, as part of an EP called, Ethereal 4.
Oneo Fakind is an eclectic electronic experiment made up of duo Matt Legge (electronics, synths, drums), and Brett Cairns (electronics, synths, drums). They formed in 2017 and their debut album Your Secrets are Safe With Us was born in a frenzy of emails and live jamming on subways. Fusing elements of ambient and psychedelic electronica with hip hop and trap, the project invites listeners to share their darkest secrets.
We appreciate the energy that the pair channel on their songs, and have added Medicinal to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their wider discography!
