Setting the tone with immersive and rippling guitars, Crystal Rose opens Break with atmospheric vocals and the vulnerable, introspective lyrics, “I can’t really let you go, don’t you understand? Lying on the floor with one hand on my chest…”
The opus expands into a luxurious, soft pop soundscape that fans of Lana Del Rey, Janet Jackson, Frou Frou, Diana Ross, Solange, Selah Sue, Bjork, Minnie Riperton and Billie Eilish will definitely be able to connect with, although it is clear that Crystal Rose is creating a sonic universe of her own.
We learn that Break is from Crystal’s upcoming EP, Anew, which is set to be released soon. We appreciate her luscious, alternative pop vibe with tinges of folk, and her poetic prowess is tangible as she takes us on an emotive journey with Break.
The record was written in collaboration with her good friend and old roommate, guitarist and producer Emi Trevena, and we love Emi’s evocative presence on Break with the rippling, reverbed guitars.
Crystal Rose grew up in San Diego, California, learning the ropes of performing through singing in cover bands from age thirteen, and the spiritual aspects of music through her mom’s musical culture in the Philippines. She is currently based in Brooklyn, where she pursues her artistic adventures in performing, producing, recording, collaborating, and teaching.
We have added Break to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Crystal Rose‘s wider discography including Thought I’d Say and Working On Myself, and anticipate the release of Anew!
