Setting the tone with an intricate strings riff and bold acoustic guitar, Grace Theisen opens Master of Fire with an Americana-blues energy and assertive, sarcastic lyricism as she sings, “I love when people underestimate me, when they try taking my power away, oh it turns me on when you gotta mansplain…”
We are hypnotized by her charisma and poetic prowess, as she unveils a subversive energy and commentary on Hollywood, the system and the patriarchy. Grace also describes the opus as “a fight song for those who are outraged at the overturn of Roe V. Wade.”.
Master of Fire was originally penned as “a sarcastic take on what it can feel like to be a woman in society”, but the song became strikingly relevant when the United States Supreme Court made a decision that set back human rights by 50 years on June 24, 2022.
We are obsessed with the soundscape and vibe that Grace Theisen has created, with strings performed by Katie Larson and Sav Buist of The Accidentals. It would be perfect for blockbuster movie synch deals. Her lyrics are visionary, progressive and her delivery is full of charisma.
The hook, “I’m a goddess, a queen, a fucking fighter, raised to be a godamn survivor…” is so inspiring, and the way she brings the concept of being the Master of Fire to life visual with her lyrics is evocative and fierce.
The strings solo with vocal harmonies section is out of the world, a transcendental experience, before we experience a high octane reprise with emotive vocal delivery as she self references by ending the song with the lyrics, “I’m falling down from grace…”
It’s genius. Grace Theisen confesses that she hopes to evoke the fire within each of us and fan the flames for change to shift focus off the shattered feeling many people are experiencing in our country right now. She will embark on a Master of Fire Michigan tour this fall to advocate for people to get out and vote to restore Roe in each state and protect reproductive rights.
Meanwhile, we have added Master of Fire to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore Grace Theisen‘s wider discography including Behind The Rain and On Fire.
