Establishing the mood with a luscious, cinematic, and layered synthscape, we are immediately hypnotized by the dimensionality of Lettie and David Baron‘s collaborative single, Escape.
You may remember that we wrote about David Baron when he teamed up with Fiona Glenn to deliver an empowering single inspired by Simone Biles called Champion, so we had a feeling that we might connect with Escape, which is also released via his label, Here & Now Recordings.
The opus expands with atmospheric vocals from Lettie, to deliver a transcendental pop energy with beautiful harmonies and a pace akin to a journey, which is also brought to light with the narrative of the lyricism.
The creative duo, who met at Woodstock, tell us that Escape is inspired by the books Candide but also The Pilgrim’s Progress, On the Road, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Rings of Saturn and films such as Easy Rider and Paris, Texas, Stranger Than Paradise.
The song is designed to take us on a journey, but also gives reverence to the possibility of a higher force, a spiritual presence or something determinate and living that we cannot see.
The pair confirm that it speaks about the “endless journey we are on in life.” We deeply appreciate the presence of the violin by Richard Moore, which generates an amplified sense of dynamism for the composition. We are in awe of the psychedelic finale, which feels like the once grounded song has evolved into an astral and cosmic energy.
Speaking analytically on the release, David Baron confesses, “Escape has a post-punk synthetic atmosphere. The driving rhythms against the repeating synthesizer patterns help highlight Lettie’s poetic warmth. I see it as an escape from our overly complex world into the inner workings of the mind. The violin represents the ultimate escape. An untethered climb into the subconscious.”
We have added Escape to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discographies of both artists!
