Setting the tone with an enigmatic riser and intricate piano, Napier Days opens The Sea with intrigue and an almost meditative energy. The opus expands with atmospheric vocals and the adventurous yet intimate lyrics, “On rainy days we go swimming out, all your fears will drown, can you feel your feet, are you touching ground trying to put them down?“
We appreciate the poetic prowess and emotion of the piece, as well as the immersive sonic energy that Napier Days delivers as he sings with wisdom, “You don’t have to pray, this is not your fault, this is the deep blue sea…”
The lyricism is metaphorical, but also healing and transcendental. Speaking on the release, Napier Days says, “The Sea is an attempt to deal with the different perspectives of a moment in life. I tried to put myself in another person’s point of view and explore how one and the same situation would feel with and without another person by my side.”
The Sea also comes with a cinematic and emotive film noir visual, shot by Yaroslav Shuraev and edited by the artist himself, Martin Kuehnert. Napier Days cites Coldplay, Tom Odell and Billie Eilish as some of his sonic influences, and fans of these artists will be able to connect with The Sea, although it is clear that the emerging artist is creating a sound of his own.
Speaking on his creative intention, Napier Days says, “The goal is to write and play music for my own peace of mind – and for those who want to listen.” We have added The Sea to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream his follow up, Blackout, and anticipate further releases from Napier Days!
