Setting the tone with rippling keys and and emotive piano performance with emerging percussive details, FM EXPERIMENT open Away with dimensionality and intrigue.
The opus expands into an acid jazz meets lounge energy, and we are hypnotized. We appreciate the rawness and the live element of the composition which features the piano as the protagonist, delivering a dynamic performance.
The overall energy is transcendental yet grounded, as FM EXPERIMENT demonstrate their depth and physical instrument prowess. We learn that Away is the second single from the FM EXPERIMENT, and the modern jazz sextet is led by french drummer Florian Mavridorakis.
The sextet is known for blending a wide array of musical influences including jazz harmony and improvisational spirit, funk bass-lines, soulful textures, West-African and Brazilian rhythms as well as Hip-Hop and Rap elements, which we can feel come through in their wider body of work, although it is clear that they are creating a soundscape of their own.
The finale of Away has a psychedelic energy which aligns with the title of the piece, almost taking us to another dimension. Away was written during the pandemic and FM EXPERIMENT tell us that the composition “explores the melancholy of being separated from the ones we love most.”
They add, “Although pain flows through this beautiful melody, it also carries the hope for better days. It paints the picture of an endless glacial landscape prone to mediation and reflection.”
We love Away and have added the piece to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we also stream FM EXPERIMENT‘s wider discography including F.T.A. and DREAMS.
