The Mars McClanes channel anti-capitalist and inclusive energy with a 90s rock soundscape on Broke Kid

It’s been an impactful year for The Mars McClanes with the releases of The Worriers and Wherever You Go, so we couldn’t wait to hear their new single, Broke Kid!

Immersing us with outdoor noise and charming ukulele, The Mars McClanes open Broke Kid with the prophetic lyrics, “When the days were still unscripted, and nights had open ends, we were young and optimistic…”

Broke Kid starts off with an alternative folk meets soft rock vibe as the Portland-based band reminisces with poetic prowess and charismatic depth. Elaborating on the narrative of Broke Kid, The Mars McClanes tell us, “[The] new track is about this: They turned down dinners with rich kids for TV and ramen with you, the Broke Kid.”

The Mars McClanes add with passion, “Let’s high five the brave few willing to bet their hearts on unfinished people.” We appreciate the tale of appreciation and gratitude from the band who are grateful for those who have supported them despite their financial circumstances.

The opus expands into a 90s style rock chorus, “with nods to Jack Johnson, Jackopierce, and Toad the Wet Sprocket.” We can feel these influences coming through, but there is no doubt that The Mars McClanes are in a lane of their own.

Speaking on their artistry, the band comment, “We’re an alt-country band who’s easily distracted by other genres, in this case, 90s alternative radio. There’s something cool about the last gasp of the MTV era.”

We love the authenticity that The Mars McClanes share with their artistry and have added Broke Kid to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their wider discography including The Liar and Day is Done.
