Setting the tone with a dimensional bass line, luscious guitar and intricate percussion, Virginia Marcs opens This Time with intrigue, warmth and the situational lyrics, “I’m not, I’m not coming out tonight, yeah I don’t, I don’t have it in me…”
The opus expands into an emotive, alternative folk meets indie pop energy, as Virginia Marcs delivers an immersive and dynamic vocal performance bearing her soul.
It is no surprise that the rising artist from Jackson Heights has already received comparisons to Daughter, Marissa Nadler, Tori Amos and Jeff Buckley. We also think that fans of early Alanis Morissette will be able to connect with her sound, although it is clear that Virginia Marcs is also creating a universe of her own.
We are in awe of the empowering hook, “This time I’m mine, this time I’m mine”, and the incredible, textured harmonies, particularly towards the end of the composition!
We learn that This Time serves as an anthem of advocacy for women and also introduces the theme of Virginia Marcs’ upcoming EP, Reckoning – due in 2023. Described as “a chronicle of fearless self-discovery and resilience”, Reckoning is produced in collaboration with indie-pop producer Katie Buchanan.
This Time also comes with a hypnotizing music video directed by Alexander Hammer (Beyoncé, Lizzo), opening with a portrait of the classically trained siren, and evolving to show the prowess of Virginia and how she commands undivided attention with her “euphoric metamorphosis from vulnerability to roaring goddess”.
Speaking on the visual, Virginia Marcs says, “I want to make women feel powerful with this video. I want men to see and feel that power, and celebrate it!”
She adds with depth and passion, “This song is incredibly healing for me and I hope it offers that to the world as well.”
Virginia will celebrate the single and video release with a show at Rockwood Music Hall on Wednesday, September 21 at 7pm. Meanwhile, we have added This Time to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we also stream Virginia Marcs‘ wider discography including You Were Right.
