Setting the tone with immersive acoustic guitar, DUEL NATIVE opens Hiding Out with intrigue and the conceptual, curious lyrics, “Cobwebs clone in the closet unknown, how long? Dark and cold but it’s comfortable, how long?”
The opus expands into an indie-folk meets dream-pop hybrid soundscape, and we are hypnotized. We appreciate the atmospheric vocals and poetic nuance in the lyricism, as well as DUEL NATIVE‘s charismatic performance!
We learn that Hiding Out is a coming out story about “trying to conceal our true selves, whether it be in the domains of money, career, sexual identity, or relationships.” Fans of Smashing Pumpkins will definitely be able to connect with Hiding Out, but it is clear that DUEL NATIVE is creating a universe of his own!
Speaking on his artistry and creative process, DUEL NATIVE confesses, “I actually first wrote the song inside a large closet at home in Melbourne. It was pretty dark and claustrophobic, and that’s kind of how I was feeling… I usually write songs for myself, but I hope this one will resonate with anyone who’s been hiding from who they really are.”
For half-Trinidadian, half-Hong-Kongese, UK-born, Australian-based artist DUEL NATIVE, the single is his first since 2021’s debut EP, XI, following his previous project in London-based indie band Greyhound Green, in which he received mainstream-radio play, media coverage on MTV Europe and supported acts such as Alabama 3, Tjinder Singh (Cornershop), and The Libertines!
We love the authenticity that DUEL NATIVE shares with his sound and lyrical prowess, and have added Hiding Out to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream his wider discography!
