Establishing the mood with melodic synth detailing and a percussive crash, with echoing textures and atmospheric vocals from Eryn Young singing the emotive lyrics, “When you were happy, I couldn’t feel you like I feel you now, you had a lot of friends before you buried down beneath the ground…”, Prepare for the Future opens Float Away with drama and intrigue.
The opus expands into a meaningful and profound narrative with a dream-pop-electronica hybrid soundscape, as Prepare for the Future and Eryn Young tell the story of “the struggle of watching someone you love go through trauma and depression, and the toll it takes.”
Prepare for the Future confesses, “It expresses empathy for the loved one, but sees and validates the experience of having to watch someone you care deeply about ‘Float Away‘ from you and feeling like there’s nothing you can do.”
Elaborating on the creative process, Prepare for the Future, who is also known as artist, Patrick Shay based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada says, “Stylistically, I really wanted to play with modern pop tropes and incorporate a more cinematic flavour with big builds that climax to a huge last chorus. I really tried to blend a lot of elements from trap drums, cinematic percussion, ambient guitars, and gloomy pianos. The goal was to have parts of the song feel very grounded but with a looming threat of drifting into space and floating away.”
Patrick has worked behind the scenes doing production and session playing for hundreds of songs for other artists such as Romancer, Shikaina Jacob, VEL, Chris Bray, and Daniella Vega, which explains why the composition hold such a refined sonic energy.
