Setting the tone with a pulsating bassline and immersive synthscape, chloe spider opens shadows with intrigue and a celestial nature. The opus expands with bold drums and glistening textures as chloe spider delivers atmospheric vocals and luscious harmonies, whilst she sings the introspective and situational lyrics, “Step in the ring, mirror, only person that I fight is myself, I let your call fall to voicemail and I have a hard time seeing myself in the same light that you see me, when I wake up I want to be lonely, alone with my own words now I’m choking…”
shadows is a genre expansive piece which takes elements of hip hop, EDM, techno and an ethereal energy, fusing them all cohesively together. We appreciate the chilled and melancholic feeling that chloe spider creates contrasted with a dramatic build up of tension and subsequent release at the bridge.
The composition is filled with poetic nuance as chloe spider takes us on a journey that touches upon themes of the human condition. Speaking on her artistry, chloe spider confesses, “The verse compares the hollow feeling I get at the end of Summer to the end of a relationship. The middle section is describing the Winter that follows. It is both literal, because it is based off of a personal experience, and metaphorical, because I liken a season to an emotion through the music.”
We are grateful for chloe spider‘s authenticity and lyrical prowess. Some highlights from the English Language and Linguistics graduate who is about to do a Masters’ in Creative Writing, include the metaphorical, “Overwhelmed, underwhelmed, colder and colder now Summer is Winter…”, and the self referential hook, “The shadows in my room, the shadows in my eyes, the spiders are gone, now there’s nowhere to hide…”
Speaking on her background, chloe spider tells us, “I am from a rural village not far from the Cotswolds. I started making music in my bedroom using an FL Studio demo back in 2016. I loved it so much that it became an all-consuming hobby for many years until Autumn 2021 when I decided I wanted to start putting my music out there more seriously.”
She cites Depeche Mode, Gud (formerly known as Yung Gud), Grimes, Tei Shi, Nine Inch Nails, ABRA, Eurythmics, Daft Punk, Bladee, CHVRCHES and Kilo Kish as some of her influences, although it is clear that chloe spider is creating a universe of her own!
We have added shadows to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream chloe spider‘s wider discography including spiders, arms and ending.
