Setting the tone with an immersive and crescendoing synthscape, Angela Parchetta opens Like You Want Me To with dimensionality, atmospheric vocals and the lyrics, “Like a shooting star and your darkest night, unexpected just passing by, didn’t realise I was in your sight?”
The opus expands into a celestial pop energy, whilst Angela Parchetta takes us on a thought-provoking and emotive journey touching upon human connection and the concept of toxic relationships.
Speaking on the inception of the song, Angela confesses, “The idea for Like You Want Me To came to me on 4th of July 2021, when I heard fireworks outside of my apartment. I started thinking about how fireworks are a great representation of toxic relationships and people. They’re bright and exciting, beautiful and celebrated…but only from far away. If you get too close to fireworks, they’re no longer any of that…they’re just dangerous.”
We love how this has been brought to life by the drums and the sound design of the track, explosive and cinematic. The lyric video for the song is also super engaging and takes us on a cosmic journey.
Angela continues her story with passion, “So with that in mind, I started writing about someone who has been drawn in by firework type loves too many times. They’ve finally learned and healed from their past mistakes and they refuse to ever experience it again. They’re basically saying ‘I know how this is going to end so I don’t want you like you want me to.'”
We appreciate the depth and poetic nuance in the lyricism and the metaphorical way that Angela creates. She cites Bleachers meets American Authors meets Reputation era Taylor Swift as her influences for the vibe of the composition, which we can feel come through in Like You Want Me To, although it is clear that Angela Parchetta is creating a universe of her own.
We have added Like You Want Me To to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream Angela Parchetta‘s wider discography including Never Again and Trust Issues.
