Establishing the mood with an immersive and rippling electric guitar performance, YONAH opens bad dreams with intrigue, dimensionality and the situational and introspective lyrics, “Had a pretty pretty bad day, lost my way on the horizon, I had nothing to say when you asked why I was gone, I hope I don’t offend you when I tell you that I’m sorry…”
The opus expands into an emotive alternative pop meets soft rock soundscape full of luscious guitar licks, intricacy and detailed percussion, as YONAH takes us on a conceptual journey of his feelings and the human condition.
Laced with poetic nuance, we love the lyricism that YONAH shares including the profound and self-reflective, “I try to write a story of a man who knows he’s strong, but I don’t really have a clue where I belong…” and the sad but hopeful, “I don’t know if I am dreaming or I got too high, I haven’t seen a light in a really long time, but I need to get better so why not try…”
bad dreams comes with a powerful and evocative visual, filmed in nature by Alec Gould, which features an exquisite and engaging performance from our protagonist YONAH, as he brings to life the emotional value of the song and message.
Speaking on his artistry, YONAH says, “bad dreams is the beginning of a new era for my music. It’s one of the first full songs I produced. I made it while living with my friend in a hotel abroad when I started having dreams about my past relationships.”
The rising artist from New York elaborates, “One night I woke up around 3am, grabbed my acoustic, and wrote the song in an hour. I woke up the next day, started tracking it, and over the course of a couple weeks bad dreams was done.”
Expanding on the mood and what is to come, YONAH confesses, “This song has inspired me to write more on the dark side of my thoughts and I have an EP coming soon based on those thoughts.”
YONAH cites Mac Miller, Phoebe Bridgers, The Beatles and Pink Floyd as some of his influences, although it is clear that YONAH is creating a universe of his own.
We appreciate YONAH‘s soundscape, performance technique and the authenticity that he shares with his art. We have added bad dreams to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream YONAH‘s wider discography including pretty pieces and lost.
