Setting the tone with a subtle frequency, exploding into intricate percussion, rippling keys and atmospheric vocals, we area already immersed and hypnotized by the Live version of Moli‘s Abstraction in the Abyss, recorded at Ferris Wheel Studios.
The opus expands with descending keys, cerebral dimensionality into a luscious, genre expansive, psychedelic soundscape. Moli sings with meditative passion, showcasing a broad vocal range and timbre, and we are obsessed.
Midway through the track, Abstraction in the Abyss strips back in tempo and production to allow the saxophone and keys to intertwine as the primary protagonists. An astral riser takes over and the higher octane energy returns only to drop out to a more funk-jazz element, where we hear the narrated vocal, “You’re onto the next stage…”.
We appreciate the organic finale fused with an industrial synth texture, as the opus breaks down with reverbed bells and laser-like celestial tones with warped energy as the opus concludes.
The performance comes with a trippy live visual, showcasing the visionary artist performing all of the instruments simulataneously, and manifesting the sonic experience that is Moli‘s Abstraction in the Abyss.
For some background, Moli is the Moniker of India based indie-psychedelia artist Anmol Gupta, we learn that Moli usually likes to dwell in an experimental ambient fusion but doesn’t really stick to one genre, believing that the whole notion of segregating music to a genre is not right.
The expansive artist started playing the tabla at the age of nine, further continuing over the years to diversify and play other instruments, professionally giving grade exams in the drums. Though, we understand that over the years, the process of giving exams didn’t really interest him and he found himself playing other instruments like the keys, saxophone, other percussion instruments, guitar, the bass etc.
Moli went on to produce his original music and has dwelled into a space of psychedelia, using multiple instruments like analog synths, deep bass lines, vintage drum processing etc. to find his own sound meddling between songwriting and hypnosis. Moli is compiling his debut album Retrogression Progression, which is designed to be “A Film Concept Album”.
We love Moli‘s energy and creative output and have added the live version of Abstraction in the Abyss to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Moli’s wider discography including Please Hold Me and Universe Rains / With U!
