Setting the tone with strummed guitar and textured percussion, satsuma scout opens his single, Day Zero with the situational lyrics, “Tomorrow, I will wake up and I won’t hit the snooze, tomorrow, I will wake up with everything to lose…”
Day Zero expands into a dynamic indie-rock meets power pop soundscape and we are mesmerized. Luscious instrumentation is fused with poetic nuance in the lyricism, as satsuma scout takes us on a journey of the human condition.
With regards to his debut single, satsuma scout says, “Day Zero specifically deals with the frustrating cyclical nature of self-destruction, depressive spells and the quotidian. The refrain of “Tomorrow I will wake up” speaks to a mindset that idealizes personal improvement, then blends itself with the self-destructive tendencies, choices and brain chemicals that prevent this growth.”
Speaking on his artistry, the emerging talent from Haverhill confesses, “Channeling the ennui, anxiety and dread of the present, my music weaves pop-punk, folk and indie alternative influence with a blistering optimism and blunt lyrical honesty.”
He elaborates on his background by saying, “A project born out of the pandemic, I picked up a guitar at age 31 for the first time in nearly a decade, revisiting songs I wrote at 21 and unleashing an outpouring of new tracks, sparked by this reigniting passion for music that I had long forgotten.”
For satsuma scout this has been a cathartic experience, he says creating music has been “both therapeutic and fulfilling”. We also appreciate the nod to his age milestones in the artwork featured in the header of this article.
satsuma scout, who is known offstage as Greg Vellante, has a debut EP (“21/31”) planned for release by mid-September and an LP (“The Common Room”) set for the end of 2022. We love the tangible passion that he creates with and Day Zero is a glowing example of just that!
When discussing influences with us, he cites Frightened Rabbit, Death Cab for Cutie, Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Tracy Chapman for lyricism, and says that his musical style inspirations include the aforementioned plus The Used, New Found Glory, Green Day and My Chemical Romance, but it is clear that satsuma scout is creating a universe of his own.
We are grateful for the depth and authenticity that satsuma scout creates with, and we have added Day Zero to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from the rising star.
