We recently featured Chapell for their dimensional and inspiring single, Beyond the Blue Sky, so we were thrilled to hear that they had just released Gold!
The New York-based band, fronted by Alan Chapell open Gold with vibrant electric guitar reminiscent of some of the most iconic songs from the 80s. Textured drums immerse us further, and Chapell open the opus with the situational lyrics, “So long it was nice to see you, for twenty-five year but who remembers, when we were the king and queen…”
We appreciate the narrative of the piece, and the authenticity and vulnerable energy that Chapell share as they take us on a journey of connecting with an ex.
Speaking on meaning of Gold, Alan confesses, “This song is sort of a historical fiction. A what if – what if I’d never gotten my [life] together and stayed in Stamford, Connecticut, as a fall down drunk.”
He adds with a comedic energy, “I found out about an ex girlfriend who was well off and living in NYC – and I hitched a ride to surprise her. Awkward…”
We enjoy the journey and the dynamism of the composition, and the poetic nuance with which Chapell delivers the unique narrative. This is something that Alan Chapell is becoming known for.
The New York band recounts real and raw stories throughout a prolific catalog of genre-agnostic pop amplified by rock energy, new wave soul, Americana vulnerability, and even a touch of Latin flavour. Gold is another genre expansive number with its roots in rock, that amplify the dynamic nature of their soundscape.
We have added Gold to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Chapell‘s wider discography including Wave as Your Walk Past.
